Fertilizer burn is usually a concentration problem

Excess soluble salts around the roots can pull water away from plant tissue and cause yellow or brown streaks and patches. Overlaps, spilled granules and incorrect spreader settings are common causes of localized damage.

Too much nitrogen can create soft, demanding growth

A heavily fed lawn may become dark and fast-growing before it becomes healthier. Excess top growth means more mowing and can leave the plant less balanced, particularly when heat, drought or disease pressure arrives.

Timing matters

Fertilizing dormant, drought-stressed or saturated turf is rarely useful. Applications should match active growth, soil conditions and the product label. Feeding because the calendar says so is less reliable than looking at the lawn and the season.

If you spill granular fertilizer, pick it up

Do not try to “water in” a pile of spilled product. Collect as much as possible first. For a modest accidental over-application, follow the product label and use sensible irrigation only if conditions allow; avoid sending nutrient-rich runoff onto pavement or into drains.

Do not stack products without checking what is already in them

Combination lawn products may already contain nitrogen or other nutrients. Applying a separate fertilizer immediately before or after can unintentionally double the rate. Read the analysis and application directions on every product.

A soil test can stop guesswork

If a lawn repeatedly struggles despite fertilizer, the problem may be compaction, drainage, pH, shade, thatch, irrigation or turf selection rather than a lack of nutrients. Testing and site assessment can prevent repeatedly feeding the wrong problem.

The goal is steady growth, not a temporary colour spike

A healthy lawn should be dense and resilient, not dependent on constant heavy feeding. Good mowing, water management, soil condition and seasonal overseeding work together with appropriate fertility.
